Angelina Jolie Files for Divorce From Brad Pitt

A press statement from Angelina Jolie’s attorney confirmed the end of “Brangelina” on September 20, according to The New York Times. Although only married since 2014, Angelina Jolie Pitt and Brad Pitt’s love affair has interested people worldwide for more than a decade – since Pitt allegedly left then-wife Jennifer Aniston to be with Jolie. Pitt and Aniston began dating in 1999 and married in 2000. They split five years later.

According to US Magazine, Jolie filed for divorce on September 19, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for seeking divorce. Her attorney Robert Offer released a statement the following day. It included the words, “This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time.”

The 41-year-old actresses is seeking physical custody of the couple’s six children Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and 8-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox. Three of the children were adopted and three are Pitt and Jolie’s natural offspring.

Jolie suggested Pitt get joint legal custody, but TMZ reported that Pitt wants joint physical custody. If Jolie is awarded sole physical custody, the children would live with her full-time. Joint legal custody would give Pitt an equal say in decisions impacting his children but he would need joint physical custody for them to live with him part-time.

The couple recently celebrated their second wedding anniversary on August 23. They wed in a small ceremony with around 20 guests at their estate in the south of France. Their children were in attendance and said to have inspired Jolie’s wedding gown. The actors had been together for nine years at that point.

Aniston has called the divorce “karma” and expressed concern for her ex-husband. She remarried last year.

Jolie is reportedly not seeking alimony but according to documents does want “separate property,” including “miscellaneous jewelry and other personal effects.” She is also asking to retain money made “from and after the date of separation.”

This is Jolie’s third divorce. She had previously been married to actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton. It will be 52-year-old Pitt’s second divorce.

Contested divorces can be long, complicated affairs that lead to many painful confrontations and expensive lawyer bills. But, uncontested divorces need not be as complicated nor expensive. Legal document assistants are able to help spouses file paperwork needed to dissolve their marriages and address matters like custody in an affordable and timely manner. Legal document assistants are also able to create necessary documents for adoption and other family matters.
